BAIX PALLARS IN ENGLISH

The Municipality of El Baix Pallars, is formed by the following villages: El Compte, Balestuí, Selluí, Ancs, Peramea, Bretui, Cortscastell, Mentui, Montcortés, Cabestany, Peracalç, Baen, Enseu, Bresca, Useu, Sant Sebastià, Castellnou, Cuberes, Sarroca, Solduga. Buseu and its administrative capital,Gerri de la Sal. It belongs to the County of El Pallars Sobirà and depend on the Local Court of Tremp.

The Municipality of El Baix Pallars is located in the southern area of El Pallars Sobirà, and is very accessible by the road N-260,coming up from La Pobla de Segur which is about 10 km south. The river Noguera Pallaresa crosses from North to the South this municipality, which at the present time and according to the last census has about 351 inhabitants, and an area of 128.8Kms2. The most important villages are Gerri de la Salt, Peramea, Bretui, Montcortés and Baen.

Around the year 807 seems to be construsted the first chuch in this area, even though seems to have been others before but there is no certainty of it. This was the Church of Santa Maria, one of the the richest Monasteries of the Bishopric of Urgell. Its heritage are great lands, mills, castles, churches and the own salt mines of Gerri de la Sal,the ones in Morreres and Llaràs.

Gerri de la Sal is an original medieval village, that had the classical structure of those fenced villages,kind of wall. We can find there in Gerri the famous salt mines that gave the current name to the village and even today we can visit it, giving to Gerri its personality and characteristic image. In the center of the village still exists the so-called popularly "Casa de la Sal" , a huge building of the XVIII Century.
